Standards for the Practice of Blood Transfusion in Namibia

The Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia (NAMBTS) is a non- profit organization and the only institution in Namibia licensed to collect, test and distribute blood and blood products in Namibia and it operates under the “Blood Transfusion Act of 1962” as amended from time to time. A Quality Management System (QMS) is maintained and operated by the Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia (NAMBTS) and seeks to establish the Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia (NAMBTS) as a center of excellence through the implementation of a quality management system that embraces all key business processes at all levels of the organization.

NAMBTS conforms to the requirements of the “Standards for the Practice of Blood Transfusion in Namibia”, to current good manufacturing practices and to recognized good laboratory practices and shall be accredited by a competent international accrediting body if financially affordable. NAMBTS strives at all times to deliver quality products and services to all patients in Namibia who require such products and/or services, and all processes developed and used within NAMBTS are directed towards this primary objective.

Regulatory Compliance

NAMBTS is licensed in terms of Section 31 of the Hospitals and Health Facilities Act, 1994 (Act 36 of 1994) issued by the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MOHSS).

NAMBTS further recognizes and enforces the following legislative framework on occupational health and safety in the Namibian law

  • The Labour Act 11 of 2007 provides regulations relating to the Health and Safety of employees at work and sets out the general duties of employers, supervisors and employees with regards to safety and describes how safety and health programmes are to operate.
  • Public and Environmental Health Act, 2015 (No. 1 of 2015) provides environmental laws and regulations to regulate the discharge of chemicals and establish allowable waste disposal practices.
